The Japanese Method and the Drilling Method, along with transplantation and broadcasting methods, are primarily used for sowing rice and other crops.
Broadcast seeding is of particular use in establishing dense plant spacing, as for cover crops and lawns. In comparison to traditional drill planting, broadcast seeding will require 10–20% more seed. It is simpler, faster and easier than the traditional row sowing. Broadcast seeding works best for plants that do not require singular spacing or that are more easily thinned later.
Drilling: In this method seed is sown by seed drill or ferti-seed drill. With the help of this implement, the seed drop at depth and results in uniform germination and regular stand. Seed bed should be fine and well levelled, free from clods and weeds for the use of seed drill or ferti-seed drill. Seed drills are easily available in the market. They may be either bullock driven or tractor driven. Ferti-seed drill should be used wherever possible to ensure uniform depth of sowing, proper placement of fertilizers and good germination.
Transplantation method: This method is practised in the areas of fertile soil, abundant rainfall and plentiful supply of labour. To begin with, seeds are sown in nursery and seedlings are prepared. After 4-5 weeks the seedlings are uprooted and planted in the field which has already been prepared for the purpose. The entire process is done by hands. It is, therefore, a very difficult method and requires heavy inputs. But, at the same time, it gives some of the highest yields.
Japanese method: This method includes the use of High Yielding Varieties of seeds, sowing the seeds in a raised nursery-bed and transplanting the seedlings in rows, so as to make weeding and fertilizing easy. It also involves the use of a heavy dose of fertilizers, so that very high yields are obtained. The Japanese method of rice cultivation has been successfully adopted in the main rice producing regions of India.
