Day 2 of 120 Days of UPSC Prelims 2024

We are going to learn about 3 important things today which are relevant for UPSC Prelims Exam.

Namdapha Flying Squirrel

It has appeared in Namdapha National Park after 42 years. It is marked as Critically endangered in IUCN red list. Flying squirrel was last spotted in 1981.

The Namdapha flying squirrel is an arboreal, nocturnal flying squirrel endemic to Arunachal Pradesh in northeast India, where it is known from a single specimen collected in Namdapha National Park in 1981.

It is important to learn about Namdapha National Park

Namdapha National Park

  1. It is situated in Arunachal Pradesh.
  2. The Noa-Dehing river, is a tributary of the Brahmaputra and flows in a North-South direction in the middle of the National Park.
  3. The park is located between the Dapha bum range of the Mishmi Hills and the Patkai range.
  4. It is only park in the World to have the four Feline species of big cat namely the Tiger (Panthera Tigris)Leopard (Panthera Pardus), Snow Leopard (Panthera Uncia) and Clouded Leopard (Neofelis Nebulosa).
  5. Hoolock Gibbons, the only ‘ape’ species found in India is found in this National Park.

Fossils found in MPs Dinosaur Fossil Bagh National Park

A stone deity worshipped by the Bhils in Madhya Pradesh’s Bagh was recently proved to be a fossilized dinosaur egg. Now scientists are hopeful of getting UNESCO’s geopark tag for Dinosaur Fossil National Park in Bagh.

Dhar District

Tirla development block of Dhar district was honoured by NITI Aayog for securing first position in the central region of India in the ranking of the Aspirational Development Block Program of the Government of India.

Some other fossils found at Bagh National Park

  • 65 million years old petrified eggs of Herbivorous dinosaurs, which are considered amongst the biggest egg found in the history.
  • 65 to 100 million years old bone remain of Sauropod and Abelisauras Dinosaur, which are considered amongst the biggest terrestrial animals in history.
  • 74 to 100 million years old remain of Shark fish, found in Narmada valley.
  • 70 million years old, sky scrapping trees of Narmada valley.
  • 86 million years old fossilized marine creatures, found in Narmada waters.

Geopark Tag

UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp) are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

Other Issues for UPSC Prelims 2024

  1. Cyclone Michaung is the first cyclone to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast after cyclone Gulab which developed in September 2021.
