The Indus Waters Treaty: This Treaty is concerned with sharing of the waters of the Indus and its tributaries between India and Pakistan. Signed by the concerned countries on September 19, 1960, this Treaty was reached through the arbitration of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

According to the provisions of this Treaty, India has the exclusive rights to use the waters of three eastern rivers (Sutlej, Beas and Ravi), leaving out remaining three rivers (Chenab, Jhelum and Indus) to Pakistan. However, India can utilize only 20 percent of the total discharge of the Indus River System, under the regulations of the Indus Waters Treaty.
