A Treaty on Integrated Development of Mahakali was signed between India and Nepal in Feburary, 1996, which came into force in June, 1997 (The Mahakali Treaty). The Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project on river Mahakali (known as sharda in India) is the centrepiece of the Mahakali Treaty.

River Sarayu flows through Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. The Sarayu river forms at the confluence of the Karnali (or Ghaghara) and Mahakali (or Sharda) in Bahraich District. The Mahakali or Sharda forms the western Indo-Nepal border.
