The phenomenal increase in milk production has been termed as ‘Operation Flood’. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) launched ‘Operation Flood’ in 1970 with commodity gifts from the European Economic Community.

The following are the main objectives of ‘Operation Flood’:

(i) Forming co-operative societies.

(ii) Procurement, transportation and storage of milk at the shilling plants.

(iii) Production of milk products and management of their marketing.

(iv) Provision of cattle breed.

(v) Provision of extension services.

(vi) Facilities for superior breeds of cows and buffaloes, health services, veterinary treatment and artificial insemination.
