• The First Buddhist Council was held at Rajagriha, under the chairmanship of Mahakasapa, immediately after the death of Buddha. Its purpose was to maintain the purity of the teachings of Buddha.

• The First Jain Council was held at Patliputra, under the chairmanship of Sthulabhadra.

• The Second Jain Council was held at Vallabhi, under the chairmainship of Devardhi.

• Third Buddhist council was held in 250 B.C. at Pataliputra, under the patronage of King Asoka. It was presided over by Moggliputta Tissa. The third part of the Tripitaka was coded in the Pali language.
