Important GI Tags For UPSC

Introduction to GI Tags-

  • Geographical Indication (GI) Tags certify a product’s specific origin and distinct qualities, setting it apart from others.
  • Originating from Article 22.1 of the TRIPS Agreement. GI protection extends to various products, including agricultural, natural, industrial, and handicraft goods.
  • India, as a WTO signatory, enacted the GI of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act in 1999 to legally safeguard region-specific products with unique qualities.
  • Notably, GI tags cannot be transferred, mortgaged, or licensed to third parties. It ensures their exclusive use by authorized holders or their designated nominees.
  • Obtaining a GI tag is a source of pride for local artisans and communities, facilitating product export and serving as a quality assurance certificate, distinguishing them in the market.

GI tag restricts the usage of the product’s name to only those authorized or residing within the defined geographic area. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the product from unauthorized copying or imitation. Once registered, a GI is valid for a period of 10 years. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is responsible for overseeing the registration process of GIs.
