Later Mughals on eve of British Conquest -Free Modern History Notes for UPSC 2025

On the eve of the British conquest in the Indian subcontinent, the once-mighty Mughal Empire found itself grappling with a myriad of challenges that weakened its authority and stability. As one of the world’s most powerful empires during its zenith, the Mughal Empire had exerted vast influence over a diverse and expansive territory, encompassing present-day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. However, by the 18th century, internal strife, economic decline, military weakness, and social unrest had eroded the empire’s strength, leaving it vulnerable to external threats.

The Mughal Empire was a really important empire in South Asian history that lasted a long time, from the 16th to the 19th century. They brought lots of changes to Indian society, like spreading Islam, making cool art and buildings, and setting up a good system of running things. Even though the empire got weaker over time, their influence stuck around for a long time.

  • One big thing the Mughals did was make Indian art and buildings super beautiful. They built amazing places like the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort, and they supported artists who made small, detailed paintings. Their style of art stayed popular even after they were gone.
  • They also changed Indian food. They introduced new flavors and ways of cooking, like using lots of spices and cooking in a special oven called a tandoor. Many famous Indian dishes today, like biryani and kebabs, come from Mughal times.
  • The Mughals also helped shape the Urdu language, which is a mix of Persian, Arabic, and Indian languages. Urdu became a language used for poetry and writing and is still spoken by many people today.
  • Even though the Mughals were Muslims, they respected other religions, and lots of Hindus and Sikhs worked for them. This openness to different beliefs continued after the Mughals, which is a big part of modern India.
  • Their way of running things also left a mark. They set up a good system of laws and order, which the British later copied when they ruled India. Some of the ways the country is run today still come from the Mughal times.
  • They also brought new ideas in science and technology. They supported discoveries and inventions, like advancements in studying stars and making better metal. They even introduced things like gunpowder and printing, which changed how people lived.
  • Even though the Mughal Empire ended, their influence on Indian culture, art, and food lasted a long time. Their ideas in running a country and their support for science and technology helped shape India for centuries to come. They were not just good rulers, but they also supported the arts, culture, and learning, and their legacy will always inspire future generations of Indians.

The Later Mughals

  • The Later Mughal period refers to the time after Aurangzeb’s death in 1707 until 1857. It was a time of trouble for the Mughal Empire, with lots of fights over who should be in charge. Bahadur Shah I was the first ruler in this period, facing rebellion from his family but managing to stay in power. His son Jahandar Shah came next, known for his fancy lifestyle but not for being a strong leader. Then Farrukhsiyar took over, but he was killed by some powerful brothers.
  • Muhammad Shah Rangila followed, liking music and poetry but not being very good at ruling. Ahmed Shah Bahadur came next, but he didn’t do much to make things better. Alamgir II was another emperor, but he didn’t have much power either. Shah Alam II came after him and had to deal with the rise of the Marathas and the British East India Company. He was even captured by the British during a battle and forced to sign a treaty giving them control over some areas.
  • Akbar II came next, but he was also just a figurehead with the British really in control. Finally, Bahadur Shah II was the last Mughal emperor. He liked poetry and supported the arts, but his reign ended with a big rebellion in 1857, which led to the British taking over completely.
  • Even though this time was tough for the Mughals, they still left behind some beautiful buildings and art. The Red Fort in Delhi, the Jama Masjid in Delhi, and the Taj Mahal in Agra are some of the amazing buildings they built. Their style of architecture continued to inspire people even after they were gone.
